Welcome to Pebble Pups, the official junior rockhound program of the Tehachapi Valley Gem and Mineral Society (TVGMS). We turn curiosity into discovery through hands-on science, outdoor exploration, and the excitement of finding something truly special!
What is Pebble Pups?
Pebble Pups is a dedicated space for young explorers to dive into the world of geology. We believe that the best way to learn about the Earth is to get your hands dirty! Our program moves science out of the textbook and into the real world through tactile, engaging, and exciting activities designed specifically for children.
The Badge Program: Learn. Explore. Achieve!
How do Pebble Pups stay motivated? By earning their stripes!
Our program is built on a proven model of achievement. Following the structure of the Future Rockhounds of America (FRA), our Pebble Pups participate in a rewarding badge system. As your child masters new skills and completes geological challenges, they earn colorful badges to showcase their growing expertise.
Every badge is a milestone in their scientific journey:
- Identify: Learn to recognize different rock types and minerals.
- Explore: Discover how different crystals are formed.
- Master: Test properties like hardness, luster, and streak!
Hands-On Activities & Discovery
We don't just teach; we explore! Our curriculum is packed with activities inspired by the best youth mineral programs in California:
- Mineral Identification: Using magnifying glasses to find hidden colors and patterns.
- Geology Experiments: Seeing how heat, pressure, and time create the rocks we love.
- Nature Walks: Guided searches for local Tehachapi stones and minerals.
- Gemstone Wonders: Discovering the sparkling world of precious stones.
A Family Adventure: How to Join
Pebble Pups is designed to be a shared experience between parents and children. We believe that geology is even more fun when explored together!
To ensure a safe, engaging, and community-focused environment, our program follows these guidelines:
- Join the TVGMS Family: To participate in Pebble Pups, families must be registered members of the Tehachapi Valley Gem and Mineral Society via a Family Membership. This connects your family to our entire community of mineral enthusiasts!
- Explore Together: Pebble Pups is a supervised program. Parents/Guardians are required to attend all activities and provide active supervision for their children.
By participating together, you aren't just watching your child learn—you are joining them on the adventure!

With nearly a decade of experience teaching in project-based learning environments, I've always been passionate about creating fun, hands-on educational experiences—especially in science and math! Beyond the classroom, I've loved creating and leading youth programs and campus clubs that give students exciting ways to explore their interests and build leadership skills. I'm a huge believer in how much extracurricular activities help shape well-rounded students, and I always strive to create a welcoming space where every learner feels supported and motivated.
I recently traded my 5th-grade teaching job on the coast for a move back home to Tehachapi to take care of my dad, a Vietnam veteran. A few months after getting settled, I started volunteering with TVGMS. Since then, I've had such a great time helping refine their educational program and getting their Pebble Pups program off the ground! I'm looking forward to helping our Pups gain the love and passion for geology that we all share!
