TVGMS Education Portal
The Tehachapi Valley Gem & Mineral Society offers a wealth of educational resources designed to spark curiosity about the natural world across all ages. Our community initiatives include the TVGMS Pebble Pups program for young rockhounds and the TVGMS Scholarship Program, which supports students in their academic pursuits of Earth sciences and other fields of study.
Our Rock & Mineral Gallery showcases 100 North American rock specimens, while our "Learn About Rocks" section provides a foundational look at geological processes by exploring Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic rocks. To further assist your studies, we provide a comprehensive Rock & Mineral Directory for easy identification and a Rock & Mineral Glossary to help you learn the language of geology. We even have a Meteorite Identification and Learning Quiz to help you find out if that interesting field trip rock is an actual meteorite!
TVGMS Pebble Pups

Ignite your child’s curiosity with Pebble Pups, the TVGMS's junior rockhound program! Through hands-on geology, nature walks, and an exciting badge system, young explorers discover minerals and scientific wonders in this engaging, family-focused adventure.
TVGMS Scholarships
The Tehachapi Valley Gem & Mineral Society awards scholarships each year to assist students with Earth science and other fields of study. The TVGMS Scholarship webpage provides information and details about our scholarship program and the required application form.
Rock & Mineral Gallery
Explore our visual database of 100 rock specimens. This gallery allows you to examine the unique textures, colors, and crystal structures of different rocks and minerals in high detail, providing a helpful resource for developing your skills in physical identification.
Learn About Rocks
Gain a deeper understanding of Earth's dynamic geological processes through our guide to learning about rocks and the Rock Cycle. This resource details the continuous transformation of materials as they transition between igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic states via essential mechanisms such as weathering, erosion, heat, and pressure.
Igneous Rocks
Learn about and test your ability to recognize volcanic and plutonic formations with this interactive identification tool. Each digital flip card presents an image of an igneous specimen on the front; you can attempt to identify the rock before flipping the card to reveal its specific name and classification on the reverse side.
Sedimentary Rocks
This page will help you learn about how to distinguish between various types of sedimentary rocks. The flip-card section displays a photograph of a sedimentary specimen on the front; you can use this opportunity to try to identify the rock specimen before flipping the card to confirm the specimen's name and rock type.
Metamorphic Rocks
Learn about metamorphic rocks and their visual characteristics. The flip-card section presents an image of a metamorphic specimen on the front of each card; you can then try to guess the name of the rock specimen before you flip the card to reveal the it's name and type.
Meteorite Identification
Use this fun quiz to test your skills with meteorites. Learn how to tell space rocks apart from Earth stones by using key physical characteristic and field tests. It's great for anyone who loves studying all types of rocks and minerals. And even those hard to find rocks from space!
